Gay H. Baynes
To an unknown Ancestor
Bound by blood,
Separated by time, stories told and silenced;
I cannot call you by name
But I feel you just the same.
Hidden doors open and I read the hieroglyphs
you left behind. Tales of courage, sacrifice,
regrets and victories.
Riding a cold sea to freedom, death on a battlefield,
slavery rejected at great cost,
a fiery orator, a plague survivor,
nursing mothers and proud elders.
I cannot call you by name
But I feel you just the same.
I bow to you in gratitude for the fruits of your completions.
I accept the incomplete scripts waiting for my additions.
I bow to you for all you endured and thus spared me
For the gift of genes that makes my dreams possible
I cannot call you by name
But I feel you just the same.
